Overview

The Adaptive Optics (AO) System Designer & Evaluator is a powerful simulation tool tailored for designing, analyzing, and optimizing adaptive optics systems used in optical communication, astronomy, laser systems, and imaging through turbulent media. It enables users to evaluate how AO systems correct phase distortions introduced by optical turbulence by modeling wavefront correction via deformable mirrors and wavefront sensors. This tool incorporates Zernike polynomial decomposition, allowing selective removal of aberration modes, and supports various beam types such as Gaussian, flat-top, and vortex beams. It helps users understand system performance gains in terms of Strehl ratio, wavefront error, beam quality (M ), and bit error rate (BER) for communication systems.

Note: The software is distributed as a standalone .exe file. Only the MATLAB Runtime (MCR) is required to run it; no source code is provided.

Key features

  • Wavefront Modeling and Correction: Simulates atmospheric turbulence using Kolmogorov and von K rm n spectra, Zernike decomposition for wavefront phase aberrations (up to 30+ modes), Selective removal or correction of specific Zernike modes (e.g., tilt, defocus)
  • Beam Types Supported: Gaussian beams (fundamental mode), Higher-order Laguerre-Gaussian (vortex beams), Plane and spherical waves
  • AO System Components: Shack–Hartmann and curvature wavefront sensors, Idealized or realistic deformable mirror models, Closed-loop and open-loop control simulation
  • Performance Metrics: Strehl ratio improvement with/without AO, Residual wavefront error (RMS), Beam quality factor (M ), BER estimation for optical communication links
  • Visualization Tools: Wavefront phase plots (before and after correction), PSF (point spread function) and far-field intensity profiles, Modal energy distribution of Zernike components

Use cases

  • Astronomical Imaging: Improve telescope imaging through atmospheric turbulence
  • Free-Space Optical Communication: Enhance beam alignment and minimize BER with AO correction
  • Directed Energy & Laser Systems: Correct beam distortion for high-precision applications
  • Biomedical Imaging: Apply Zernike mode-based correction for microscopy in scattering media
  • Research & Education: Train students and engineers on AO system principles and trade-offs

System requirements

  • Software Dependencies: MATLAB or MATLAB Runtime (MCR)
