Hybrid RF/FSO Communication Analyzer

The Hybrid RF/FSO Communication Analyzer is a simulation and performance evaluation tool that models hybrid wireless communication systems combining Free-Space Optical (FSO) and Ra

Overview

The Hybrid RF/FSO Communication Analyzer is a simulation and performance evaluation tool that models hybrid wireless communication systems combining Free-Space Optical (FSO) and Radio Frequency (RF) links. This tool allows system designers and researchers to analyze the link reliability, switching behavior, and joint performance of dual-mode communication systems under realistic atmospheric conditions. The software incorporates weather-dependent attenuation for FSO links (fog, haze, rain, turbulence, pointing error) and channel fading models for RF links (Rayleigh, Rician, and Nakagami-m). It supports adaptive switching, parallel transmission, and selective combining strategies.

Note: This product is distributed as a standalone .exe file with embedded MATLAB code. No source code will be provided. MATLAB Runtime (MCR) is sufficient.

Key features

  • Atmospheric Modeling for FSO: Fog and haze attenuation using Kruse, Kim, and Al Naboulsi models, Rain attenuation effects based on ITU-R recommendations, Scintillation (turbulence) using Log-Normal and Gamma-Gamma distributions, Pointing error impact using Gaussian jitter model, AOA fluctuation handling at the receiver aperture
  • RF Link Fading Models: Rayleigh, Rician, and Nakagami-m models for multipath RF channels, Rain fading attenuation using ITU-R P.838 standard, Frequency support from GHz to sub-THz bands
  • Hybrid System Strategies: Switching schemes: RF-only fallback, FSO-only fallback, threshold-based, Combining schemes: Max-SNR selection, Equal-Gain Combining (EGC), and weighted selection
  • Performance Metrics: Average BER, Outage Probability, Effective Capacity, Link Availability (%), Downtime estimation, Hybrid gain over individual RF/FSO links

Use cases

  • Smart Backhaul Networks: Design resilient urban backhaul using hybrid RF/FSO links
  • Disaster-Resilient Communication: Evaluate failover behavior when FSO links degrade due to poor weather
  • Rural and Remote Connectivity: Model long-distance hybrid links with frequent weather changes
  • Academic Research: Performance benchmarking of switching strategies in variable channels

System requirements

  • Software Dependencies: MATLAB or MATLAB Runtime (MCR)
